Shock Suspenstories #11 – Wally Wood art

Shock Suspenstories v1 #11, 1953 - Returning to his hometown, a Korean War veteran finds out his GI buddy’s body is rejected from the local cemetery. Despite the dead soldier’s heroism, the townspeople conspire to have him buried elsewhere. Wally Wood faithfully depicts a festive homecoming on the opening page, complete with billowing American flags. Patriotic townspeople crowd the train station Read the rest of this entry »

Fantastic Four #1 – Jack Kirby art & cover (1st Fantastic Four)

Fantastic Four v1 #1, 1961 - The first appearance of the FF begins with Jack Kirby's iconic cover. Inside, their origin is drawn with adventurous flair with a touch of science fiction. The way three of the characters reveal themselves (in full public view) seems especially innovative. The second tale opens with a large panel (a variant of the cover), announcing the threat of the Mole Man. The Read the rest of this entry »

Heroic Comics #40 – mis-attributed Alex Toth art

Heroic Comics v1 #40, 1947 - No Alex Toth artwork in this issue, despite what comic book price guides say. Toth did do the interior art for 13 other issues of Heroic Comics. Life of Captain Marvel #5 – Jim Starlin art, cover & reprints

Life of Captain Marvel v1 #5, 1985 - Completing Jim Starlin's terrific bronze age run, this final issue reprints Captain Marvel v2 #32, Captain Marvel v2 #33 and Captain Marvel v2 #34. Starlin once again provides new material that's lacking in enthusiasm. His cover design is especially monotonous, compared to the work inside. This is number 5 of 5 Life of Captain Marvel issues with Starlin art  Read the rest of this entry »

My Own Romance #68 – non-attributed Matt Baker art

My Own Romance v1 #68, 1959 - An ambitious model longs for something more in life, while another woman searches for her ideal man. Matt Baker's style is evident in both stories, despite the lack of credit. Unfortunately, his pencils are considerably watered down by Vince Colletta's inking. Certain faces and figures are poorly delineated. Baker's layouts do remain intact and are generally Read the rest of this entry »

Donald Duck Adventures #18 – Carl Barks reprint

Donald Duck Adventures v1 #18, 1989 - A reprint of "No Such Varmint" from Four Color Comics v2 #318 resides in this issue. It's a passable alternative to the original in my opinion. See today's posts or more Barks or Donald Duck Adventures issues. See also this blog's Carl Barks checklist. - - - - - - - - - - Find on ebay: >this issue, >more Barks issues, >more Donald Duck issues Read the rest of this entry »

Creepy #4 – Frank Frazetta cover, Al Williamson art

Creepy v1 #4, 1965 - Dracula meets the Werewolf on Frank Frazetta's straightforwardly designed yet compelling cover. Al Williamson's work is relegated to the inside front cover. Despite the small panels, there is no lack of effort or enthusiasm in its execution. Note the fine coloration and texture. Other artists in this issue include Angelo Torres, Al McWilliams and others. This is number 4 of Read the rest of this entry »
